FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • WHAT DOES LIMITED EDITION MEAN?

Limited edition prints are specifically created by the artist, with only a certain number available. Most of my editions are limited to 200. Each print comes with a certificate, dated, numbered and signed with the original artist's signature to show their authenticity.

  • CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE NUMBERS ON A LIMITED EDITION PRINT?

Most of my prints are a print run of 200. This means I have 200 identical prints all with an individual number from 1 to 200. The first number shows where that particular print was produced in the run. The second number is the total number of prints produced.

  • ARE PRINTS SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY THE ARTIST?

Yes, each print is signed and limited editions are also numbered, by myself, Megan Young.

  • DOES EVERY PAINTING/PRINT COME WITH A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY?

Every original painting and limited edition print comes with a certificate carrying an authentic Megan Young Fine Art seal. Each one is hand signed by myself and limited edition prints are also numbered. OPEN edition prints are hand signed by myself  but don’t require a number or certificate.

  • WILL THE PAINTING/PRINT COLOURS FADE?

My original artworks are painted on 300gsm Saunders Waterford High White paper, with paints from the Winsor and Newton professional watercolour range. I find this combination offers excellent protection against discolouration, and will maintain true permanence where the colours won’t change or fade over time.

All my prints are produced to a superior standard using professional LUCIA pigment inks on Hahnemhule Fine Art Archival paper. Prints will have an expected lifetime guarantee of at least 80 years under glass in normal lighting conditions. (If you hang your print in a particularly bright, sunlit location this will reduce the expected lifetime guarantee)

  • DOES THE PAINTING/PRINT COME READY TO HANG ON THE WALL?

All framed pictures come with cord attached by D rings on the back, ready for you to hang straight on the wall.

  • HOW DO I VISUALISE THE SIZES?

If you are struggling to visualise the size of a particular picture, try looking at the outside framed size (shown on the product page) and making yourself a mock-up out of a cardboard box or paper. Hold this against the chosen wall to give yourself an idea of what it will look like in your home

  • HOW WILL MY PAINTING/PRINT BE PACKAGED

I always take time to package my original paintings and prints carefully and securely with a superior level of protection so that they arrive in perfect condition. I use a combination of heavy duty cardboard to prevent bending, plus a good cushioning of bubble wrap and strong brown paper. Framed pictures also benefit from corner protectors.

You will find more delivery information on my DELIVERY & RETURNS page.

  • DO YOU SEND ARTWORK WORLDWIDE?

I can send any unframed print overseas. The shipping calculator at checkout will show you the delivery charge to your country. If you would like a mounted or framed print feel free to get in touch to discuss delivery options. Please also be aware of any taxes or customs duties that may be payable, as these will be your responsibility.

  • WILL YOU BE PRODUCING OTHER ITEMS SUCH AS MUGS, COASTERS OR TEA TOWELS

This is something I am considering but only with a painting produced as an OPEN edition. It can be considered unethical to reproduce a LIMITED edition print in any other form as this takes away the authenticity and value of having a small number of reproduced images. Therefore non of my limited edition prints will be reproduced as greeting cards, tea towels, mugs etc.

  • DO YOU TAKE COMMISSIONS?

At the present time I am not accepting commissions.

  • CAN I USE IMAGES OF YOUR PAINTINGS?

My paintings are protected by copyright laws and images may not be reproduced or used in any way. However, if you would like to use one of my images please contact me expressing how and why you wish to use a particular picture. I will assess your request and grant written permission if applicable.

  • HOW DO YOU START A PAINTING?

I generally begin with an idea, when something catches my eye or I come across a picturesque scene. I try to visualise the finished picture before I actually start, then depending on how I think the painting will evolve I may come back to the idea until it pushes me to paint it (or it could fizzle out and never be created!)
For me, observation is a key factor. I can take hours just noting the colours, tones, detail and negative shapes of a subject or scene, making small sketches, taking photos and short videos to refer back to later when in my studio. The more familiar a scene or subject feels, the easier it is to recreate on paper.

  • HOW LONG DOES A PAINTING TAKE TO FINISH?

This is probably the question I get asked most by those who view my work. I have never been one for painting quickly. A sketch or washy painting can be completed in a matter of minutes, or a couple of hours, but to produce a precise, detailed watercolour will take me at least a few days, usually more than a week, whereas larger paintings can take several weeks, even months to complete. How long is a piece of string!

  • DO YOU USE PHOTOGRAPHS?

Yes, I like to take plenty of my own photos and short videos to use as reminders. They can be a valuable source of reference when working on a painting later in the studio and no longer having the subject to hand. The challenge for the artist is to go beyond the photo to create an image. Unless you are a talented photographer, an amateur photo will never capture the range that the eyes can find in a scene.

  • WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU USE AND RECOMMEND?

My paper of choice is Saunders Waterford High White, a 1OO% cotton superior quality watercolour paper, traditionally made by St Cuthberts Mill in Somerset. Compared to traditional watercolour  this paper has a slightly whiter surface that makes watercolours appear brighter, full of life and vitality. It is a durable paper that can take a reasonable amount of scrubbing and alteration without destroying the surface.

My brushes are a combination of Winsor & Newton Series7 and Pro Arte Connoisseur brushes. Series7 are exceptionally high quality, hand crafted kolinsky sable brushes that feel good in-hand and hold paint well. I use them mainly for washes due to their unsurpassed water-carrying performance. The Connoisseur brushes are a very durable blend of synthetic and sable hair. I find these brushes excellent for controlling precise brush strokes and painting detail.

I have used a variety of watercolour paints but always get drawn back to the Winsor and Newton professional range more than any other. I have found most of these paints possess a brilliance and good strength of colour that produce clean, reflective washes and enable me to paint clear precise detail. They have a permanence where I am confident the colours I use in any painting today will appear the same for many years to come.
